Read a 9-Year-Old’s Letter to Obama About Putting a Woman on U.S. Currency — and His Response
“Why don’t women have coins or dollar bills with their faces on it?”
The little girl who asked Obama last year why there aren’t any women on U.S. bills has finally gotten a letter back from the President — and she’s invited to the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. President Obama made waves last year when he mentioned he had received a letter from a little girl asking him to put some women on U.S. currency, which he called a “pretty good idea.” That letter was from Sofia, a Massachusetts girl who was just finishing third grade at the time. “I was studying Ann Hutchinson, who stood up for women’s rights,” she says. “Almost everyone who chose a boy, on their poster they had pictures of different dollar bills or coins with their person on it. So I noticed, why don’t women have coins or dollar bills with their faces on it?” Sofia, now 9, knew immediately what she had to do. “I just came home from school and said, ‘I need to write to the president.’” Sofia’s mother provided her letter exclusively to TIME:

For a while, Sofia didn’t hear anything back from the President. She says she “sort of forgot about it” until her dad showed her the President had mentioned her letter in a speech. “I was really excited about it, because I thought that maybe it would actually happen,” she says. In the months since Sofia wrote to Obama, a campaign to put a woman on the $20 bill has gone viral. The W20 movement is hosting an online poll so the public can vote on which woman should replace Andrew Jackson. The group plans to petition Obama and the Treasury Secretary to make it happen. Almost 220,000 people have voted in the online poll so far. And Sofia, who is now in fourth grade, is a junior ambassador for the campaign. Even though she’s a longtime fan of Ann Hutchinson, Sofia wants to see Rosa Parks on the $20. “What she did was really important,” she says. “If it wasn’t for her, we’d still be segregated today.” She got her whole class to vote in the online poll, and her third grade teacher got her class to vote as well. Last month, Sofia finally got a personalized letter back from the President, along with an invitation to attend this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll. Here’s what President Obama wrote to her:

For Lucasfilm, the Way of Its Force Lies in Its ‘Star Wars’ Fans
By BROOKS BARNESAPRIL 17, 2015
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Even in the social media age, some movie studios still see fans as zoo animals to be force-fed: We, the cool film people, will tell you, the easily manipulated consumers, what to like. Other Hollywood companies have developed a true appreciation for the geek masses, but they are still learning how to hone a strategy.
And then there is the “Star Wars” studio.
At a time when creating — and controlling — fan communities has become crucial to the success of all kinds of movies, the company that remains the most skilled at that art is Lucasfilm. Unlike most big studios, it has a full-time head of fan relations. Employees respond to handwritten letters (yes, they still flow in, mostly from children), and pump out exclusive tidbits on six social networks each day, with materials lined up a month in advance.
The heart of Lucasfilm’s fan operation is a biennial gathering called “Star Wars” Celebration, the 10th installment of which started here on Thursday and is expected to draw 45,000 amateur Jedis, Wookiees and Stormtroopers over four days. “How many out there waited all night long?” Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, asked the crowd inside the Anaheim Convention Center as the event began.

SINGAPORE — Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today (April 6) shared a candid memory of his late father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, on his Facebook page.
PM Lee posted a picture of an old telegram that he found while sorting through his father’s items.
Dated Sept 26, 1958, the late Mr Lee, who was practising as a lawyer in Lee & Lee then, simply wrote “ARRIVING TODAY BATTLESHIP = LEEKUANYEW”. PM Lee shared that his father had intended to inform the family that he will be expected home from Sibu, Sarawak, and that he’d wanted to have steam boat for dinner that night.
But, Mrs Lee did not understand the message when it was sent. She thought Mr Lee was returning on a battleship. PM Lee recounted that the law firm’s secretary even called the British Naval Base at Sembawang to check if any battleship was arriving from Sarawak. But no one knew anything about it.
“My father did arrive home that day, but not by battleship,” PM Lee wrote. “He explained that he wanted steam boat for dinner, but as “steam boat” was two words, and telegrams were charged by the word, he wrote “battleship” instead, to save words and money!”
The steam boat dinner was not to be that night, but the fond memory remained for PM Lee.

Goals are for Losers. Passion is Overrated.
Goals are for losers. In a complex world, systems are better. Systems are something you do on a regular basis to increase your odds of success, and make yourself more valuable, without a specific goal.
Passion is overrated. It doesn’t predict success; it usually follows success. Success causes passion more than passion causes success. Successful people tell you passion was the key because any other answer makes them sound like jerks. (You can’t say you’re smarter than poor people, for example, even if you believe it.)
