Tesco is stepping up its efforts to be the world’s leading online grocery retailer and fighting back from a decline in global sales by launching a click-and-collect service in Asia. The retailer is to open the service at its hypermarket at Ramindra in Bangkok, Thailand. It will be the first time that a retailer has launched a click-and-collect service in Asia which allows customers to collect their online food orders from supermarkets.Tesco sales are falling around the world, putting pressure on the management team led by Philip Clarke, but the retailer believes that investment in digital retail can drive growth.

Tesco already offers click and collect in the UK, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ireland.

As well as launching a click-and-collect service, Tesco plans to expand its online grocery offer outside Bangkok, to Chiang Mai and Pattaya.

Tesco is now selling groceries online in 50 cities around the world, including Shanghai.

Its global online sales are more than £3bn, which compares to £732m for Britain’s largest online-only retailer, Ocado.

John Christie, chief executive of Tesco’s Thailand business, which is called Tesco Lotus, said: “Online shopping has proved really popular with customers in Bangkok since we launched six months ago.

“It makes grocery shopping much more convenient for them, especially with the traffic in Bangkok.”

He added: “We’re adding capacity all the time.

“Click and collect has also proved hugely popular in the UK, so it’s a natural step to offer this as an option for customers in Thailand and demonstrates Tesco’s multichannel strength in this part of Asia.”
