Hengqin theme park ‘not a threat for Disneyland’
Thursday, November 07, 2013
A theme park being developed in Hengqin island off Zhuhai will not be a rival to Hong Kong Disneyland. Giving the assurance, the Hengqin New Area Administrative Committee chief said the positioning of the park is different from Disneyland or Ocean Park, but it could enrich the tourism resources of the special economic zone. “Apart from its location, its area and facilities are different as well,” committee director Niu Jing said.“There will be two big parks with a lot of motorized rides on either end of the HK-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.”
Niu earlier said Disneyland management staff visited the new project and were confident about the theme park opening next month.
Travel Industry Council chairman Michael Wu Siu-ying also feels the new theme park will not become a competitor to Hong Kong Disneyland.
“The park will only be another tour spot for visitors to Zhuhai,” Wu said.
“Also, the new theme park is similar to Chimelong Paradise in Guangzhou, and its location is convenient for domestic tourists since they will not need to cross the border.”
Wu added that many tourists choose a four-day travel package covering Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai. “The theme park would provide a new place for visitors to enjoy,” he said.
In emphasizing that the park will not affect local tourism, he said: “When mainlanders visit Hong Kong, they love to go shopping, and there are also many attractive spots for them to visit.”
The Hengqin park will not hit the number of visitors from Macau traveling to Hong Kong either, he said.
Meanwhile, the mega HK-Zhuhai- Macau Bridge that will connect to Hengqin will open as scheduled in 2016.
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority executive director Wei Dongqing told of good progress in construction works.
“Many new technologies are being used in its construction that required [us] to apply for patents. This brought some difficulties,” he said.
All reclamation work for the new Hengqin Island will be completed this month, Wei said.
“They will start infrastructure work on the island, including establishing a border crossing for Zhuhai and Macau,” he added. Reclamation costs for the island were 2.3 billion yuan (HK$2.9 billion), which was within budget. HILARY WONG
