Compared with the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Yangtze River Economic Zone, the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone is the mostly likely to be elevated to the national level of economic planning.
The Pearl River connects Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau in the east and links Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi in the west, and is an extensive river system in southern China with a total length at 2,197 kilometers.
The 452,600 square-kilometer Pearl River basin makes up for 20 percent of the nationwide river shipping volume.
According to the China Business News, the administrative region of the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone is 507,000 square kilometers, taking up 5.28 percent of the total area across China, and its total population has been recorded at over 240 million.
In 2013, the combined gross domestic product (GDP) of Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi and Guangdong was 9.66 trillion yuan (US$1.53 trillion), which accounted for 17 percent of the national GDP.
In addition, the Pearl River Economic Zone includes four major economic zones-the Pearl River Delta, the Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone, the Central Guizhou Economic Zone and the Central Yunnan Economic Zone-and several state-level platforms for economic development.
However, the News pointed out that the internal gap in economic zone was large. The Pearl River Delta in the east of the economic zone was one of the most developed areas in China, while Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi in the west lagged behind.
Guizhou’s per capita GDP for last year was merely 22,981 yuan, which was 39 percent of Guangdong’s GDP.
Therefore, the imbalanced development in the economy and society of the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone was expected to impart momentum for future development.
Hu Xiaodeng, head of the urban development research department at an academy of social science in Guizhou, noted that it was essential to develop the economic belt of the Pearl River Delta.
Speeding up construction in the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone could facilitate hinterland construction in the export-oriented Guangdong, Macau and Hong Kong.
Additionally, accelerating construction is important in terms of connecting with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Hu also noted that the development of the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone had to be enhanced to the state level so that the barriers present in regional cooperation could be eliminated.
