Japan’s First Lady Launches Talk Show on Web

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s wife Akie is launching a web-based talk showthat will feature guest speakers exchanging their thoughts on “what happiness is” with her.

The program, titled “Abe Akie no Shiawase-no Katachi” (Akie Abe’s Shape of Happiness), will be shot at the prime minister’s residence with volunteer staff. It will “invite guests from a variety of backgrounds and ask them what happiness means to them,” Mrs. Abe explains in opening remarks, before adding that she hopes to “make this a fun and happy program.”

The first episode, made available on Tuesday, features Mrs. Abe spending about 35 minutes with performers Dengeki Network, who are known overseas as Tokyo Shock Boys. The group entertains the first lady with their famous crude stunts, including chewing dry ice and blowing steam out of their nostrils.

“I was not aware of the group,” Mrs. Abe said in response to their performance. “They should get more recognition in Japan,” she added.

In regards to what defines happiness, the host shares a comment saying the key to being happy sometimes is not seeking perfection and settling for less. “That’s how my marriage works,” she playfully tells the viewers. “We’ve sort of given up on each other.”

The airdates for the next episodes have not been set yet but Mrs. Abe will be speaking with singer Sachiko Kobayashi on Japan’s future and the country’s recovery from March 11, 2011 disaster. The third episode will feature model Lena Fujii.

Mrs. Abe is well known for her frank comments and appearances in places one wouldn’t typically expect to see Japan’s first lady at. In April she took part in a gay rights parade in TokyoDuring an interview with the Wall Street Journal at a pub she runs in Tokyo, the first lady spoke about her disapproval of nuclear power and the TPP.
