Shaolin monks can also practice Buddhist teachings in outer space because Buddhism depicts a boundless universe, and even believes in life outside Earth, the temple’s abbot says.
Shi Yongxin, head of the temple in Henan province known as the home of Chinese kung fu, told the state newswire Xinhua said that those who master the teachings of Buddhism can reach buddhahood and travel to other worlds, which could be the outer space of popular imagination. The abbot admitted however that he has never been to outer space and does not know what it is like up there.
“The brainwaves of high-level monks are different than those of ordinary people, according to scientific experiments. This is a phenomenon that should be known to the aeronautical industry. Maybe a modern monk could also try to be a spaceman,” he said.
China’s space program continues to move ever forwards with the launch of the manned Shenzhou-10 mission earlier this week. Travel agencies in Jiuquan, the city in northwest China’s Gansu province which was the site of the latest launch, offers 800 yuan (US$130) tour packages, allowing visitors to watch rocket launches from within 3km of the base.
The majority of Jiuquan’s hotels were reportedly booked in advance as people came to witness the event. Smaller hotels also took advantage of the situation to raise their prices.
